History
This small local Charity providing help to the sick poor people had its beginnings in 1892 as the Taunton District Nursing Association, which was founded by Miss Ethel Fisher.
In 1901 George Saunders of the London Hotel which became the County Hotel and is now Waterstones provided money for a nurses home at 21, Canon Street from which four district nurses operated in the Taunton area. Following the National Health Services Act of 1946, the Charity’s future use of 21, Canon Street was uncertain, however, it became a Maternity Home until 1967.
The District Nursing Association and the Charity for the benefit of the Taunton District Nursing Association were brought together under the title Taunton Aid in Sickness Fund. Following many years of meetings and hard work by Mr L S Daniel it was recognised by the Charity Commission in 1963.
